A Little Humor To End The Week ~

Today’s repost originally was published on September 30, 2022. Portions of this post were excerpted from the laughing librarian’s Facebook page and Google graphics.

New Life Goal

In today’s post, I thought I would share a humorous look at a new life goal, inspired by a meme posted on the Laughing Librarian’s Facebook page. I hope this new goal will bring a smile to your face to end your week…

My new life goal is to have a TV show like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives except it will be called, Bookstores, Beverages, and Besties.  In this show, I would visit different cities in each episode, browse the city’s best bookstore with friends who travel with me, and enjoy various beverages, as we enjoy our books.

In my mind, it certainly is a goal worth striving for — sounds like fun to me.

Some Random Humorous Thoughts ~

Today’s post was originally published on my blog on October 28, 2022.

For a number of years, I posted on my blog a daily Thought, Word, and Random Thought.  In today’s post, I thought I would share a few of my favorite Random Thoughts from over the years

Some of My Favorite Random Thoughts

♦ Random Thought: We all have some sort of standards we live by, and then there are people who feel they are always right because they have double standards…

♦ Random Thought: The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for…except voting!

♦ Random Thought: Recently I received a Chinese fortune cookie that read: “I wish I could help you with your life, but I’m just a cookie”…

♦ Random Thought: When people say, “Can I ask you a question?” …are they really giving you a choice?

♦ Random Thought: “It is what it is” is too readily used in our society? How about: this is a problem, let’s address it and try to solve it…

♦ Random Thought: So when a person says, “They haven’t got all day” does that mean they have a shorter day than I do…

In today’s post, I thought I would share a little humorous poem with my fellow senior friends. This poem was sent to me by my wife, Sharon.  Unfortunately, I was unable to track down the author who penned these little verses, but I am confident that the poem speaks to most seniors.   Even if you aren’t a senior, you will be one before you know it, so read it and heed the advice…just something to think about.

Seniors

A Little Poem for Seniors, so true it hurts!

Another year has passed
And we’re all a little older.
Last summer felt hotter
And winter seems much colder.
There was a time not long ago
When life was quite a blast.
Now I fully understand
About ‘Living in the Past!
We used to go to weddings,
Football games and lunches…
Now we go to funeral homes
And after-funeral brunches.
We used to go out dining,
And couldn’t get our fill.
Now we ask for doggie bags,
Come home and take a pill.
We used to often travel
To places near and far.
Now we get sore asses
From riding in the car.
We used to go to nightclubs
And drink a little booze.
Now we stay home at night
And watch the evening news.
That, my friend, is how life is,
And now my tale is told.
So, enjoy each day and live it up…
Before you’re too damned old!

Some Friday Humor ~ A Short Essay

An Early Library Adventure

nunOne of my first experiences with visiting the Public Library was when I was in grade school.  I was in the third grade when my teacher, Sister Rachel, decided it would be a good idea to take our class to the Public Library.  Keep in mind, school field trips in those days were not a common occurrence, so this was a “Big Adventure”.

Fortunately, for Sister and our class, the library was only a few blocks from our school, i.e., within walking distance.  Picture if you will, a third-grade class of some 60 children, marching single-file down the street, led by one lowly nun…what a brave soul she was.

It should be pointed out that we were warned that dire consequences would occur if any of us misbehaved on the way to or from the library or while we were in the library — bad behavior would be a negative reflection on our school and our family.  Sister also explicitly told us that if we checked a book out that we were to treat it with the utmost care and respect — NO DAMAGED BOOKS, NO OVERDUE BOOKS, and NO LOST BOOKS.

I believe all of us checked at least one book out that day.  I was so nervous about my selection; I was almost afraid to even read it.  After a few days with the book, I told my parents that I needed to return the book to the library because I was afraid of losing it.  I was certain that if anything happened to this book some sort of harm would happen to me or my family.

I certainly can identify with the classic Charlie Brown comic featured below:

Some Humor To Think About

words 2As an avid reader, I often learn many new and interesting things as well as reaffirm some of the basic ideas and concepts of life.  However, quite often I find words that require me to look up their meaning and check for understanding.  Conversely, I come across a word that brings a smile to my face and wonder how such a word even entered into our language.

In today’s post, I want to share a list of words I recently discovered, that I hope brings a smile to your face today.

  1. Bamboozled
  2. Flabbergasted
  3. Discombobulated
  4. Shenanigans
  5. Cattywampus
  6. Lollygag
  7. Malarkey
  8. Kerfuffle
  9. Brouhaha
  10. Nincompoop
  11. Skedaddle
  12. Pumpernickel

I am sure that many of you have read these words and many more that would bring a smile to your face.  Although these words sound funny, in most cases they are used to best express a particular situation or experience.  Mark Twain, said it best about words: “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter—’tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning.”

A Memorable Humorous Quote…

child-pile-books-16993799As a former bookseller and librarian, I always love hearing about conversations between parents and children when visiting the library.  The following was recently overheard in a library between a mother and her daughter:

Mother: “You have 15 books! 15!  We are coming back later in the week; it will be okay.”

9-Year-Old Daughter: “You don’t know that.  Something could happen.  These are emergency books.”
